Tony Tasset Better Me Book Review

Book cover of Tony Tasset Better Me, displaying a frowning snowman head sculpture with coal for eyes and mouth and a carrot nose.

I’ve not always been a fan of Tony Tasset, mostly because I didn’t understand his art. I remember seeing his Domestic Abstractions as a militant vegan while in college - I HATED that he was using animal skins in his work. Was it even art?

Over the years I’ve mellowed, gotten better educated, and have started to really appreciate what he has done and continues to do. And as I started to look at his work through a Duchampian lens, I REALLY started to appreciate it.

This book, "Tony Tasset Better Me,” is ostensibly a catalog for the exhibitions of the same name (University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, January 14 - February 23, 2003 and at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland Oregon, March 12 - April 19, 2003), but is equally useful as a primer of all things (most things? Some things?) Tony Tasset. Explanatory essays and an interview really give a good insight into his work and his way of looking at things.

If you ‘re a fan of Tasset or just curious, this is a book well worth tracking down. Recommended.
